Στην πρώτη φθινοπωρινή τους εμφάνιση οι No Man’s Land θα παρουσιάσουν κομμάτια από το τελευταίο τους album “Unprotected”, δείγματα από τις προηγούμενες δουλειές τους, καθώς και καινούριο υλικό υπό μορφή work in progress.  Διεκδικώντας το βραβείο της πιο επίμονης μπάντας του υπογαστρίου των Βαλκανίων, οι NML συνεχίζουν την περιπλάνησή τους στα δαιδαλώδη μονοπάτια της ψυχεδέλειας και του progressive rock.

Η βραδιά θα ανοίξει με μία ακουστική σόλο εμφάνιση του Robert Sin, σε πρωτότυπες folk rock και alt. country συνθέσεις. Ένας νέος τραγουδοποιός με γνήσιο ταλέντο και πηγαίο συναίσθημα, με πλούσιο παρόν και εξαιρετικά ελπιδοφόρο μέλλον.

Για το τελευταίο album των No Man’s Land “Unprotected” γράφτηκαν μεταξύ άλλων τα εξής:

...εκείνο που φθάνει στ’ αυτιά μας είναι ένας εξαιρετικός ήχος, με τα όργανα στις θέσεις τους, και τους μουσικούς κατασταλαγμένους όσον αφορά στο παικτικό δόσιμο. Ωραία soli…στην κιθάρα (με επιμελημένη και μελετημένη χρήση των εφφέ), άψογο rhythm section και βεβαίως μ’ ένα πνευστό τμήμα, που παρέχει τα απαραίτητα, όσο και διακριτά ηχοχρώματα, ενσωματώνοντας ακόμη και jazz ή romance υπαινιγμούς στο συνολικότερο ψυχεδελικό οικοδόμημα.

...Το άλμπουμ Unprotected είναι η τέταρτη ηχογραφημένη δουλειά που κυκλοφορούν από την αθηναική δισκογραφική εταιρεία Anazitisi και ουσιαστικά επισφραγίζει το ότι το σπουδαίο γκρουπ διανύει μία δημιουργικότατη περίοδο. Η ψυχεδέλεια, το progressive και η τζαζ συνυπάρχουν και διαμορφώνουν τον ώριμο ήχο της μπάντας, τα μέλη της οποίας είναι από τους πλέον αξιόλογους μουσικούς που διαθέτει η ντόπια σκηνή. Το Unprotected κατορθώνει να καταγράψει άκρως πετυχημένα την ατμόσφαιρα και το vibe που δημιουργούν οι No Man's Land στις συναυλίες τους (κατ' εξοχήν λάιβ συγκρότημα - όσοι τους έχετε δει καταλαβαίνετε τι εννοώ), ενώ παράλληλα οι συνθέσεις και το παίξιμο είναι επιπέδου….

"Unprotected" by Greek psych-proggers No Man's Land is a wonderful album, at once retro, Ozricky, futuristic, jazzy and Mediterranean. Guitars meet brass meet massive delay units meet flutes meet more... The band have their roots in the 'eighties, and released a couple of albums then, but after an almost twenty year hiatus returned to the Athens scene to make more groovy psych music. Opening cut 'Moribundo Part 2' matches Hillagesque guitars with trumpet, spitty drums and solid bass - superb. The thirteen minute 'Flame' again has the trumpet, but also great vocals in 'sixties Scandinavian style (think Barrett Elmore, Deleted Waveform Gatherings, etc) and loads of floating flute - another great track, which manages to be both a song and a jam. 'A Brave Face' is rougher, tougher and louder than anything that so far has appeared, but the pattering drums and brass once again carry the track, alongside more excellent vocals. 'Permian Vacation' sounds like an alternate-world Jethro Tull, with some particularly tasty guitar work, while closing cut 'Unprotected In The World' is another jazz-inflected track with lots of guitar, and more. A beautiful book-style CD package completes a striking release. I loved this - bravo!

...Kicking off with “Moribundo Part II,” a steady paced psychedelic instrumental rocker with a sumptuous guitar and melodic trumpet, a real warmth is apparent in the mix.  Unlike many current day releases, the highs exist without shredding your ears.  The drums are natural and bass is full.  Flute soon joins in, followed by trippy brief chanting vocalizations that make heavy use of reverb which spans widely across the soundstage. Take notice of the psychedelic jazz feel that the trumpet injects into this mesmerizing rocking opener.In excellent prog form the second track “Flame” clocks in over 13 minutes long.   There is a taste for vocals near the beginning and end, but this too is mostly an instrumental piece.  With a middle-east tribal rhythmic pulse, guitars are wet with vibrato leading the listener on another trip. It becomes clear that No Man’s Land has created a pretty unique sound. The mix is very well balanced, with a real flair for the legacy sound of psychedelic rock.  Listen for the intense cello solo, freeform segments, and mellow soundscapes that drop you into a meditative state, all keeping the music engaging.  A little of the early 70’s band Gong can even be heard within this track.Go ahead, crank up your stereo.  Take yourself to a show with No Man’s Land doing a performance in your listening room.  With a touch of King Crimson shining through, the third piece, “A Brave Face,” takes on an aggressively rocking quality. Midway in the guitar rips away with a dirty raw sound, and then turns on a dime, transitioning to a melodic floating section led by flute.

With a bluesy Jethro Tull edge, “Permian Vacation,” is radio ready at just over four minutes. There are some nice dueling solos which richly identify the sound of this band.

Overall the quality of the sound from track to track is very consistent helping give it a nice club feel.

The closing track “Unprotected In The World”  takes the listener back to 70′s progressive albeit with the bands trademark sound.  Vassilis’ talent shines through as he solos with just the backing of drums and bass.  The chunky guitar takes on both the aural quality of a small club and studio truly showing the power of their musicianship.

...So you get the point - the music of No Man’s Land is fully psychedelic, fully proggy and plenty jazzy. It’s the combination of these vibes that makes Unprotected a great record. The band crafts a very unique musical sound that doesn’t betray any obvious influences but will most certainly appeal to prog fans. If you checked out their last disc, this is a must-have. On the other hand, it’s a great disc to start with. Great stuff!

...In summary, Unprotected is an impressive set of psychedelic rock that does an excellent job of creating melodic accessible music, yet takes a progressive rock approach to instrumental thematic development, whiling managing to retain a loose jamming quality. And I love the way these guy utilize the guitar, flute and trumpet. Recommended.
